Can someone please explain Sends / Returns

Hi I' ve been reading the sends and returns in the manual over and over, I just can't seems to figure out how its works. Can some please explain this.

under each track you should see an area marked "sends" with , at default at least,
two knobs labled a and b. if you dont see this click on the view tabs at right or under view in the browser above on "sends"
turning these knobs will "send" an output of your signal on that channel to one of the "return" channels on the right of the session view, next to the master output.
This is useful if you want to say use a cpu intensive reverb on more than one track without utilizing more than one instance. Or, in a much more creative, imo, instance using a midi gate to achieve cool, chopping, rythmic gates a la' prefuse 73. Whatever the idea is to be able to group outputs of several channels together for processing of some sort. At default the sends are a wet/dry 50 50 mix with the main output. In the routing section of the channel you can select "sends only" to , well you know use the sends output only.
