HELP! I'm a Girl!

Post by Diana Ayanna » Wed May 31, 2006 6:46 pm

Hey guys,

I just ditched and switched from Protools to Live. I am just starting to familiarize myself with this new setup and I am a bit overwhelmed. To set up the scenario for which the questions just keep coming......

Equipment: Macbook Pro; Motu Ultralite; Novation Remote SL; and a Revolution

Issues:

1) I have installed all software and connected all hardware except the revolution. The Remote SL has been upgraded for auto mapping.
Can anyone guide me through the proper Live preference settings, as well as the Motu preference settings so that all the equipment works "slaved" to live? (I would like to be able to run midi plus effects from my revolution into Live for both recording and 'live situations" and I need everything to be synched properly.)

2) Are there certain setup features that I should be aware of with the ultralite or Live that are handy to know?
3) Somehow I managed to set my main template page in Live to one of my projects... anyone know how to reset the main template so that it is a blank live session upon opening??

If anyone can help me through any of these issues, please let me know.... I want to know the shortcuts you figured out. . . . . so I can get back to the creative. . .

P.S> I have almost completed the Ableton Live Power Manual as well as the ultralite user guide... but you know sometimes it's just easier learning from the wizards rather than the words....

Thanks,

1. i dont have the sl
2. or the ultralite, so i know nothing specific to them
3. i do know this one though:

set up your project template the way you would like it to open
go to options->preferences->defaults
click save to save your current project as the template

best of luck, and welcome to the forums.

There is a tutorial for setting up midi devices within Live.

In Prefs: THere is a MIDI Tab. With the Controllers PLUGGED IN, select the MIDI Device IN and MIDI Device OUT...

To Test, try to assign a knob or key to a parameter. If it ain't set up, :Live will let you know.

But, check out all of the tutorials and read the manual. The manual is written very well as not to bore you to death. You might find Live has capabilities you didn't know to ask about...

Good Luck
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.

Check out this post from a fellow Ultralite/Live user...

http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=39721

Basically the Ultralite's outputs are numbered differently in Live than they are on the Ultralite.

Good friend of mine just got one and we spent an hour or so trying to figure out why the outputs weren't working. Looks like a sweet interface...I think I'll trade my Firebox for one soon...

Gee,

If I ever need a date, I'll just put a post up on the Abelton forum..!!!!

In all seriousness, to any ultralite w/ macbook pro users- what are your settings to help with latency..?

LOL!!

Where's Adonis??!!

I don't have that equipment, but this is pretty universal.

The settings that most affect latency are under options -> preferences. There's an audio buffer size and a plug-in buffer size. The larger the buffer, the better Live handles audio (no glitches) but MIDI is slower.

My desktop machine only has 500Mb RAM so on audio only projects I'll crank up the size of the buffers, for MIDI projects I'll turn down the buffer size and bounce as much audio down to as few clips as possible.

My laptop has 1Gb RAM and none of this is a concern at all, I'm not even sure where it's set.

This can all change as your computer gets other programs installed over the coming months, nature of the beast.

Searching for 'DAW optimisation' can lead to pages to show you how you can turn stuff off on your machine to get more out of it.

But I can understand... it's not often that a girl asks you to help her with her latency...

* as a hundred bumbling elephants trip over themselves just to make your acquaintance *

Anyways, posting "HELP! I'm a Girl!" doesn't do much to keep yourself inconspicuous...

There is no way it's even a girl (let alone one who looks like that)...

Probably a guy who looks more like Matthew Herbert (or everyone else here)... :(

For 3) Page 62 of the manual says you can delete the template.als, located in the Preferences folder for Live to restore to factory template.
