v5.2 : Unable to turn off Auto-Warp when recording?

Hi all,

I'm already speaking with the Abes about this but was wondering of any of you could double check this on any other Intel systems for me?

I can't seem to record in either Session or Arrangement (shouldn't make any difference anyway...) WITHOUT auto-warp.

I have "Auto-Warp Long Samples' turned off in Preferences.

As an Ableton suggestion, I cleared the 'preferences.cfg' file but this hasn't helped.

For what it's worth, I can drag files from the browser and they remain unwarped but when I record directly into Live all tracks are warped.

Maybe a re-install is in order?

P.S. I thought it might be an Intel 5.2 problem but have just noticed it does the same on my PowerBook. Hmmm...

I was humbly told by the Abes that it is in fact imposible to record new tracks with auto-warp turned off.

Upon reflection, I can totally see the point of this within a program of Live's tempo/loop-based nature.

Maybe this could be a Preference 'Feature' wish for us more 'live' band orientated guys when we're recording over, say, 10 -16 tracks in one pass?

Anyways, thanks to the Abes for suffering my ignorance.

i find that setting the warp preference default to 'repitch' is the best way for recording

I have to say that i am pretty disappointed by the inability to turn the 'auto warp' off. Unless I am missing something here (which is possible) this feature makes it impossible for me to use live as a live sampling/looping tool.

looping and sampling are somewhat vague terms, so i'll elaborate:

the backbone of my band is a drum machine, so live takes an external midi sync. this is fine, and seems to keep good time. we have it set to loop over (say) 8 bars. the vocalist/guitarist will hit record, then sing/play, and turn off record when she's happy with the last 8 bars.

as it is, the warping business makes my loops go completely out of time/tune/both (depending on what warping method is selected). this had me absolutely puzzled, and i wasted quite a few hours suspecting that it was a midi sync problem (the midi setup is a bit complicated and involves some old gear).

manually disabling the warp on the resulting sample makes it play fine, however this extra step is not at all practical for a live setup, where looping/playing and layering may be happening continuously.

basically the inability to disable the auto warping feature is a critical problem for me, and will most likely keep me from using the software... oh well.

If you record something and DON'T CHANGE THE TEMPO AFTERWARDS nothing is being warped, in beats, tones or repitch mode (complex is different) - the warping ONLY kicks in if you change the sequencer's tempo or move a warp marker (obviously).

I have tested this by mixing a clip with warp on & one with warp off, inverting the phase of one clip. They cancel out perfectly, ie they are identical.

Hmmm, strange. I feel that something in the sound changes when I turn warping of recorded sounds off - it sounds better, more natural.

Isn't it true that warping "quantizes" the beat and that grooves of recorded sounds are therefore destroyed if warp is left on?

Well my ears always told me that if no warp markers were moved, and if the tempo wasn't changed that the audio sounded exactly the same as unwarped.

Out of curiosity I tested this out, rendering a track with warp on, one with warp off, phase inverting one and adding them together. They cancel out ompletely, (not in complex mode by the way) that can happen ONLY when the files are identical. Try it. By the way Robert Henke has also written on the forum that unless there is something to do for warp (change of tempo, or moving a warp marker) audio is unaffected.

Not sure if you were replying to me as well but the problem I had was that I don't always record to a click when I'm recording rock bands and so Live was always doing some sort of warping until I went through each tracks and turned off warp.

The main problems being the fluctuations in tempo as well as the ever so slight differences in time that different sounds enter the various microphones (ambient mics, bleed etc.) which would lead to some severe warbling due to the warping as well as phase fluctuations between tracks because each track is being analysed independently of each other.

Turning off warp after the fact brought everything back to normal but it's an extra step that could be easily alleviated by having an extra preference to turn off warping while recording.

Now that I know this is a characteristic of Live it's not a big deal but I just couldn't figure out why I couldn't turn off auto-warp when I had auto-warp turned off, if you know what I mean?
