Andrew Duke--Consumer vs. User remix competition

Post by AndrewDuke » Mon Jun 19, 2006 4:59 am

Dear Ableton Livers:

Ableton Live played a HUGE part in the production of my recently-released Consumer vs. User album and I hope you'll enter the remix competition related to it (details below). Also, there are 4 prizes in the list that you'll likely be very interested in.

The Andrew Duke--Consumer vs. User remix contest is now officially "live" on http://andrew-duke.com and http://stratagem-musik.com and running until August 31, 2006. The best resulting remixes will be released on Stratagem Musik and great prizes are up for grabs including software, magazine subscriptions, books (including 2 copies of Chad Carrier's Ableton Live 5 Power!), CDs-ROMs (including 2 copies of Brian Jackson's Ableton Live CSI Master), and CDs.

Even if you decide not to enter the contest, there are 385 WAV samples (available as 24bit and 16bit) from my Consumer vs. User album (http://www.phthalo.com/cat.php?cat=phth40) available for free download on http://andrew-duke.com as well as a full preview of the album's lead track.

I do hope, though, that some of you music-makers here will enter the contest. And please spread the word to any producers and composers and sound designers you think might be interested in entering the contest and in playing with the samples.

Thanks.
Take care.
Andrew

Sounds cool!

Any particular style you're hoping for? If it's in my range of genres, I'll tack it on my to-do list :)

Cheers,
Tim

Hi, Tim.
Stratagem Musik will be releasing their faves, so best to listen to the vibes they've released so far: http://www.stratagem-musik.com
They've got a pretty broad range, but better to listen to what they've released than for me to try to explain it in words!
Take care.

Hi, Stinky.
They must be doing an update. Worked fine a couple of hours ago, so please try Stratagem again later today. My page is working fine and has the samples and contest info, too.
Take care.

I have a question about the contest rules:
Using only these samples from Consumer vs. User, create a track and submit it to Stratagem Musik (deadline: Thursday August 31, 2006 12 noon Atlantic Standard Time); the best results will be released on Stratagem Musik and there's also a great bunch of prizes that will be given away including:
Does that mean we can only use your samples? Not our own instruments? That doesn't make sense to me.. can you clarify, please?

can these samples be used for other tunes too?

Hi, Stinky.
Yes, for this remix contest, you can only use those 385 samples. Of course, you can modify the heck out of them and use your modifications of them in your remix entry. Think of the potential and the possibilities here, not the limitations of this. In the sound design and music production course I teach, students do their first assignment with just 20 samples and their second with just 30, and they come up with some amazing results in a wide variety of music styles--there's 385 samples here. You can make all kinds of new things with these as starting points.

Greetings
Thanks, Steve. Starfilterx is a remix of a track from a friend of mine,
Galerie Stratique from Montreal. The original is a short beatless
ambient track and I built that rhythmic version out of a sample from
it.

Yep, the samples can be used for other tunes, but please post a link so
I can check out the results.
Thanks.

no, i understand now, thanks. It didn't seem completely clear to me if that was actually a "requirement" for this contest. Additionally, with the way you can effect sound, i really don't know how you're going to enforce that kind of rule. But, i guess you're just expecting everyone to respect that rule. Which is what i didn't understand.

Cool. Yes, it's really an "honor system", but I'm figuring people will rise to the challenge and just use those samples. I'm looking forward to hearing the results.

Hi, Stinky.
Liam @ Stratagem Musik and I have talked tonight about the "using only these samples" part and we've decided it would be best if people did their best to use just those samples, but outside samples are OK too. So here's the update on the contest rules:

Entrants are strongly encouraged to use only the samples from the Consumer vs. User sounds zips in the creation of their remix, but
this is *not* a requirement.
