Audio cutting out and lagging

I'm running a Powerbook G4 with 1.5 gig of ram. My problem is this: I have a fairly big session open with 150 odd scenes. Not too many effects open and bugger all midi clips. I've tried increasing the buffer size, but this just seems to make it worse. The CPU meter is only going to about 35% at max but when I change scenes the audio lags, stutters and cuts out. This is only momentary but its bad enough that I cannot perform live this weekend if its doing this... please HELP.
