God yes, I was once serving in the bar for my dads anniversary and one of the guests came and played for hours on end on these contraptions from hell, I wished someone would have come and put me out of my misery.

They can sound cool, but in small doses only :D

the Uilleann (Irish) pipes are one of the most lovely instruments around

But I guess they're not the ones he meant

The Scotch pipes are harsh - like thistles, spiky woolen tartan, rugged Craggy snowcapped ladscapes, Salty porridge and Glasgow.

I'm glad my grandad played the dulcimer instead

i think i have seen a freeware vst for making bagpipe sounds but i have also heard people get pretty realistic results just with a synth.

im sure there's one about somewhere but i cant find it on google...this looks interesting though http://news.harmony-central.com/Newp/20 ... galis.html

If you search the EXS24 user group at Yahoo you'll find some multisamples which are pretty good.

blimey

yeh they do sound kind of annoying sometimes, but i heard this tune on the radio today by faust which had some old droney bagpipe sounds in it. cant remember the name of it or anything but i thought id try something like that myself. maybe i'll sample some old scottish marching band record or something.

cheers

Maybe try in Google - bagpipes.wav - might throw up some samples which you can chuck into Simpler?

Come to think of it, would probably sound quite haunting with a deep textur'y pad and a good bit of reverb. Nice and haunting maybe. Heard a tune on tv one night with a really deep drony bagpipe sound and a really emotional pad and some weird drums, sounded excellent. Even tried to get the name of the tune, wrote to the bbc and everything but never ever got its name.

Here you can find some free bag pipe soundfonts:

http://www.hammersound.net/cgi-bin/soun ... tLength=15

No idea of the quality...

LOTS of other soundfonts on hammersound.net BTW.

Use together with eg. rgc's free soundfont VST:
