If you had your own wireless setup in your home, it would be much faster. Relying on other people's wifi has proven to be extremely unreliable for me. For some reason, my router no longer works as far as wireless so I have to plug in. There are around a dozen networks in my range, but they're all secured.
Chances are, if you download lots of files or stream video, their speed will go to shit. And watch out if you use iTunes - your shared music will probably show up in theirs

If people can't spent 10 minutes reading the manual to set up thier wifi securely then they deserve what they get, I can pickup something like 3 or 4 WIDE OPEN connections all the time just sitting in my garden.
How hard is it to set up a key, not have it broadcast, and perhaps setup mac filtering? But they don't, because it didnt work out of the box, so they just turned every security feature of until it did.
People are idiots, like the people that installs a filesharing program, don't want to be bothered actually thinking and just share thier whole C:\ drive.
Do a search for common filetypes like doc, xls, and digicam file formats, hey thanks for the word document with all your passwords named 'my passwords.doc' and the naked pictures of your wife.
