Loading large files into RAM

Post by David » Fri Jul 21, 2006 10:46 am

Hi folks,

Last night I dragged a large audio file into a clip, it was an entire mix i had done, about 50 mins long, probably about 500mb or so. As it was loading slowly I switched on the RAM button to load it quicker but this totally crashed my system, or froze it for about 10 minutes until I then ctrl-alt-del End process of Live. I guess loading very large files into RAM is not recommended then?

First: Don´t use the RAM Mode for a whole set or a big file!

If you use all your tracks in Arrangement View in RAM Mode, your system will crash or there will be measures you won´t hear some tracks, beacuse they don´t play anymore. Your Arrangement won´be able to be played full.

The Problem is that your Operation System handles the RAM.
Every not used data will layered to the hard disk and will only be moved to the RAM, if it has to. So the main poblem is not the RAM Mode, it is the handling of the data (see manual for detailled information)

Conclusion: it is better not to use RAM Mode for many clips or a big file, because Live (and you) better understands crackling audio of a stressed hard disk than full cancelled clips.
Conclusion 2: It is not recommended to use RAM Mode for large files.
Hope my explanation helps you
