Hey Ableton community,

Name's Cosmo D. I'm a cellist/producer/improvisor. I make a strange blend of electronic music that could be compared to the Books, Mouse on Mars or Arovane though it's reeeaaaaly funky. Anyway, I've put together a remix contest celebrating the release of my new track,Apothecary Passageway, which is, consequently on a new album of mine, Plantastic Joyage.

But what am I doing with Live?


Live is the heart of my operation these days. I'm using Live while playing my cello into the computer running that software. I've got a midi foot controller that controls the various triggered aspects of the software (sample cue-ing, muting, record arming, beat switching, etc.) I've got a small continuous controller strapped to my thigh in case I need to turn stuff up or down. All the audio is routed through a fire-wire mixer. It's a fairly light setup, but it gets done what I need in terms of dynamic, live, improvised sequencing, with my cello-playing thrusting everything forward. I want to create sounds and ideas that are contsantly evolving, never repetitive, but still groove-based. Live is helping me achieve this, even as I further hone in the best possible on-stage working strategy.

Ive downloaded the tracks and it sounds awesome, some of the riffs (if i can call them riffs) could easily be built as whole track on their own. Very suprising, sounds great as is. Good recordings I like the 'negative space', there's lots going on but it's not overly chaotic. Good tension throughout. Cello, even the name is pleasing to say. Lots of stuff to play with, this could be a cool remix contest. Put a link in the General Forum as a remix contest, more people will see it there. Any tips on a key to use? I'm sure it was done more by ear and feel, I had to ask the composer it cuts a lot of corners.

I'm going to guide you in measure #'s:

meas. 1-4 First chord riff is in D Major,

5-6 then it pitch-shifts to D-flat. Then back to D major in 7-8

9-16 is in D (melodic minor), moves up to F major. Back and forth each successive masure

the following section... 17-24 wasn't written with any specific key in mind. You could lay an e-flat minor or a-flat minor chord under it with minimum dissonance. give it a try

measures 25-30 with the Bass Ostinato line... that's A Major, but a turn to the minor in 31, 32.

Then the melodic section from 33-56 shifts between F-sharp minor, D major dominant, A major, A minor. There's a lot of chromaticism and passing tones in there though, though. I'd say just use your ears.

Then the noise/rhythm breakdown (57-64) is in no key signature.

The next section, 73-81, follows the same progression as 33-56, but now hovers around the chords C major, F major dominant, C minor, and D major as a passing chord. Again, a lot of chromaticism, a lot of passing tones, a lot of dissonant clusters. Use your ears.

81-84 is firmly in the key of C major, but in 85-86 it goes down to B major, and then back up to C major for the rest of the piece.

The whole piece is basically a series of flipped riffs descending lower and lower throughout the song.
