I need help w/Live and Vinyl....

Post by sadie8686 » Mon Aug 21, 2006 3:29 am

I have just purchased Live, but I don't know what the setup is for me to spin vinyl and incorporate Live and my MacbookPro. I have a 5 channel DJ mixer, but I suspect I may need an audio interface b/c of this article I read in the new Digital DJ magazine. It recommends having 4 audio channels on Live's session view, assigning each to a stereo set of outputs on an 8 channel audio interface and connecting these to the line inputs on 4 audio inputs on the DJ mixer.

1)what kinda interface would you recommend keeping price in mind.
2)why do you need 8 channels on the audio interface? Is that for the 4 Ableton channels split up, or 4 Ableton and 4 mixer channels? I'm confused.
3)what kind of wire links the computer to the interface? And what sends the vinyl's audio to the computer (or does it even go to it)?

I'm using a MacbookPro w/Final Scratch2, and a Numark 5000 DJ mixer... :D

I'm using Live with SSL. You basically need an audio interface with 2 stereo outputs (i.e. 4). I'm using the m-audio Firewire Audiophile which does the job but it feels a bit unstable and I wouldn't really recommend it. I'm sure there's some posts on this forum about a better choice for a mac but essentially you just need 4 outs.

I then feed these into my dj mixer along with SSL... so I'm using 4 channels. I know FS2 has midi but I don't see any way of linking your midi clock between the 2 systems... I looked into this as I nearly purchased FS2 for its midi capabilities. The way I sync the 2 is through tap tempo... just use live's tap tempo and your mixes will be smooth as anything.

Its definitely useful to send an out from your dj mixer bank into Live (as stereo... so make sure your interface has at least 2 inputs). That way you can record stuff to play as clips. Its good for scratches and loops that can add to your set.

Help w/setup....

What is the best interface to use if I am using FinalScratch? Isn't all of my output going into my computer with the FinalScratch amp, as it pertains to the part where you said to make sure there is an out from my DJ mixer back into Live as stereo?

My set up is different as I have ableton on my desktop computer and ssl on my laptop. I haven't tried running both on the same machine... I should imagine it would be fine although I wouldn't like to try it in a Live situation.

If you can select your fs2 amp as an input in Live then you wouldn't need to input back into your mac from your dj mixer (unless you want to record your mix as the ableton channels won't be coming through the fs2 amp). So essentially you would only need an interface with 4 outs to connect your 2 stereo channels from live to your dj mixer.

Where in Live do you select FS2 as your input? Can you do this w/Ms Pinky Pluggo??
