How do you structure your tracks (time wise)?

Post by CarrieAnna » Wed Aug 23, 2006 6:36 am

Hey, if you guys have any suggestions on a good format to go with I would really appreciate hearing about it. I want my tracks to be mixable. Is it something like this:

Intro- 16 bars
Verse 1- 16 bars
Chorus- 8 bars
Breakdown- 8 bars
Repeat verse and chorus
then big breakdown
etc...

Thanks again....I'm struggling.

Take a few of your favorite songs and write their structure down. Eventually you'll end up with a bunch of templates for song structures which you can copy or change.

You can't go wrong or right with that format. There's a zillion great songs with the same format.

Use nothing but your instincts to feel when you want it to switch and to what.

Then try a 6 minute mix and keep it interesting. Try a few drops. Then cut a four minute mix arrangement from the six minute arrangement and put the best moments together.

If the song is vocal centric, it all rides on the vocal.

Know the feeling

By mixable do you mean beat mixing?

What style of music do you want to make?

Instincts are all well and good. Provided you have been listening for a long time.

I would probally go with the first suggestion find some songs you like and copy.

I have found that most dance ( house, trance, etc) has quite a set format. It should be quite apparent once you start to disect some of your favourite tracs

good luck

4 8 12 16 32 bars. Not much is required of instincts concerning these few choices. The rest is letting the song decide.

I like a vague sort of ABA structure... start somewhere, go somewhere else, go back.
Suit #1: I mean, have you got any insight as to why a bright boy like this would jeopardize the lives of millions?
Suit #2: No, sir, he says he does this sort of thing for fun.

Mixable, beats - easy

music has no rules 1st so you know, do what you do

The mix out is more important than the mix in - IMO and experience.

Tease the bass, lead etc on the way in and bring that shit out hella quick on the way out

check out the VIA MUSIQUE stuff www.myspace.com/viamusique as examples of teasing the intro and outro

everything in the middle really is up to you

a really good dance track gets to the point quick and stays there, then breaks down and builds back up - but after that last build, (cause alot of djs like to mix through the break or que their beats up to the break) bring all that shit out hella quick

Renato Cohen is good at bringing a mini build up towards the very end of his beats (check out his shit on SINO and INTEC) - that's nice for whan you're riding both tracks and the record you have coming in hasn't dropped (i.e. the main bass or lead)

so record 1 (the one you're mixing out) does the little mini build and people are like that's the same record but right on que when that one breaks the new one drops <--- instant crowd pleaser

check out my track on the VIA MUSIQUE page ONE NIGHT IN RIO <-- I'm trying ok, damn

anywayz - I got a few more for the dj on www.myspace.com/teknolife and www.soundclick.com/djadonis206

currently I'm on my own as ROMAN is on vacation so I figured I'd put together a demo to shop around when school starts - got some neat things in the works, I'm feeling the eq

plus that ONE NIGHT IN RIO track, KYLE POUNDS REMIX is a TOTAL FUCKING BEAT DOWN, plus MIKE BALANCE is doing a remix as well <--- that's going to be the SINGLE!

Available exclusively through www.dancerecords.com <--- could I plug the heads a little more?

but yeah

Outro is more important than intro (cool little tricks and shit in the outro)
Get to the point, stay there and get out as soon as possible
edits, fills and breaks never hurt anyone either

but remember Ms Carrie - this is all on the assumption you're hot (I think I already told you that once so)

peace
