Not in time, this time!

Hi,

Here's a strange one: when I place short loops i.e. drum loop or bass loop, both audio tracks play in time but in my new DJ set up when I load MP3's and warp mark them, they do NOT play in the same tempo as the project tempo! What gives? Here's how I warp mark the MP3's: I disable the warp function, play the song in its original tempo and tap to it, when I get the general numerical feel I just round it up then I switch the warp function on and Live gets it quite right as far as the divisions are concerned. Then I save it and they should be ready to play back in any tempo I want, right? Not quite so as when I launch the second track it is completely out of sync. I can't seem to figure out what's going on here.. any ideas? Hope this ain't too stoopid.

Usually you'll need to go in and move the warp markers, the first tend to be off the beat, thus shifting the rest of them. Warping comoplete tunes isn;'t 100% automatic, it does require some tweakign to get thigns locked tight.

If it's stupid, then I'm with you. I followed your procedure and got the same result you did. The two files don't sync at all. And isn't warping/syncing where all things begin with Live?

Are we missing something, or is there a problem here?

I tried going in to get a better lineup; when I shifted a marker then all others shifted, throwing things off in other places, meaning I couldn't get it right unless I dbl-cliicked and manually placed nearly every marker myself. Too time intensive. But doesn't the fact that the markers didn't consistently line up mean that I haven't really gotten the audio BPM right? And I got the BPM from tapping along with the audio. Is input latency an issue here? (I'm using M-Audio ASIO drivers, default 12.3 ms in/out, 512k buffer.)

BTW, I noticed that the BPM that showed in the global tempo is never exactly matched in the sample BPM when tapping.

the process you described sounds pretty slackass of a way of figuring out a tempo...so no wonder its off. probably only by a slight amount but enough to cause problems.

i have DJed with live in the past and never had this problem when i was using a WAV which i warped by hand. time intensive but definetly better than having an algorhythm try to interpret audio which it cannot hear the sound of but can only read...

but tell me...what is the song.
because you might be pretty dead on with the tempo but maybe it is a recording with a slight deviation in tempo which is throwing everything off.
