Sampling from the Field

Since I began attempting to produce and design elecontric music on computers I've always thought samples generic and of very poor quality. I wasthinking that I want to start using my own samples from the 'world' and then do the rest in ableton or whatever. I was wondering what is the best way of recording sound? Are those portable sound recorders any good? If so, can anyone recommend a decent one that won't break the bank?

I was also thinking of starting to pick up some really simple hand instruments, like those ones you see usually as decorative items. Would the MIC on my MacBook be ok to sample these with? Or do you need a really exspensive MIC to get anything close to studio quality samples?

I'd recommend one of teh M-audio or Edirol portable units. The mic in the Mac is not likely to be quiet enough or sensitive enough for what you want.
