probably-redundant q: Live 4.1.4 roxx, Live 6 glitches. Why?

So I have happily used Live 4.1.4 for a year or more... just got Live 6.

My system is a PC: Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo, AMD Athlon 6200+ CPU @ 2.08GHz, just installed 1.5GB of RAM (upgraded from 512MB). Audio is via RME Multiface.

So when I first got Live 6, if I loaded my old 4.1.4 sets it would crash. I emailed Ableton tech support and they told me the 512MB RAM in my system was probably not enough... so I got an extra gig and chunked it in there, and tried again. Now, the same set that plays nearly flawlessly in Live 4 sounds like ripped-up ass noises when I try to play it back in Live 6. The sync is off from one track to the next (this is a mix of VSTi's, Ableton instruments and wave files), which is new... can someone give a Live6 N3wb some tips on setting it up for good performance? I am guessing that I just haven't tweaked all the options correctly. I'd really like to get this thing working...

Have you tried turning Delay Compensation on/off? Tried increasing your buffer sizes (this will give your CPU more breathing room)?

I would fiddle with the buffer size. I recently went from 4.1.4 to 6.0.1 also. I noticed that the latency jumped from 2.33ms to 12.3ms with the exact same hardware at the exact same settings. I posted something about this a couple weeks ago but nobody seemed to care or noticed as the forum was swamped with useless rubbish pointing to you tube.

I will fiddle accordingly... I'm mildly disappointed to hear that the latency shot up like that... I use Live, well, live; meaning that I sing and play keys through it in realtime. Extra latency really messes with me when I am listening to my voice and trying to sing on-beat. I'll report back with any useful settings or stats changes.

As for the ripped-up ass noises... all well and good if I ripped them up myself! Not so good when it's a mix gone haywire and you can't adjust the clean/ass ratio to taste.

ISTR that at some point in the Live 5 series the calculation for the displayed number was changed to be more accurate. There was no difference in actual delay terms, just the number in the panel changed.

I also basically upgraded from 4 to 6. Several things were not quite right, but I chalked it up to differences between how sets are handled between 4 & 5 and then 5 & 6. Most of my panning controls were off center.

I basically reloaded 4 & 6 from scratch to try to get everything back to normal (and I think it worked).

Live 6 does behave differently than 4. I think your prob may be with the library. Try the library management tool so live knows where everything is. Also, save your sets as self contained files - it may be that you are waiting for samples/clips to load while you're playing your songs.

Also, go to the downloads page and download/install the Live packs for 6 and the sound sets for Live 5 - especially the Live 4 backward compatability pack.

I'm still tweaking too. Some things work very well in 6, while other things are a complete mystery. Overall, 6 is clearly better than 4, but there is a learning curve with this upgrade.
