Minimal Kick Drum

Post by eturnol » Tue Oct 24, 2006 7:23 pm

Hi,

How do i get that nice minimal kick drum sound found in minimal techno? it usually sounds softer and more like a lump than a thump.

Is there a certain amount of compression they use? do they eq it in a certain way? is it a layering (i actually don't think it's this, because the kicks often sound the same from song to song and from artist to artist). do they slip edit the beggining thump portion of the kick?

my kick drums usually sound harder, like the usual 909 kick drum found in progressive music. please let me know...

i think that Waldorf Attack VST will do the trick.
it lacks low freq's by default.

hey adam jay...i have a 909, which i believe can do the 808 style kick.

does the 808 kick have a slightly longer attack time, to give that duller lump sound?

there's no eqing involved? i would think you would want to round off the highs to get rid of the pop associated with the 909, leaving only the dull thump behind.

what kind of compression do you usually use? 20 ms attack and 50 - 100 ms decay with a ratio of 1:5?
or is the attack shorter?

eqing the kick initially will take from the initial integrity of the kick...

wouldnt it be better to scoop out the higher freq with a filter and layer the kick over another 808 with a slightly longer decay?... just a thought. this is how i build my kicks normally... oh and dont forget your compression. when your close to the final sound you want for your kick i would then start trying to eq it to get it just right.
