Crahsing Live 6.0.1 on a dualcore pc

Post by l-rs » Sat Nov 04, 2006 10:06 pm

I have sent logfiles to Ableton support weeks ago, but they haven't got back to me yet. Anyways...

I suffered from a crashing Live 6.0.1 on Windows XP. It just died, silently and only Windows itself offered to let me send an error report. :?

After a lot of trial and error I figured out that when I start it up Live's setting for dualcore mode needs to be OFF. So I made that default in my template set.

It can be turned on while working on tracks to take advantage of the extra cpu power, but it needs to be OFF again when I load a different track.

Recently I noticed that Live 6 crashes sometimes when I load a native effect and the dualcore support is ON. My soundcard (ESP1010) goes a very loud and annoying BZZZZRT until I reboot my machine.

Only in those cases where Live 6 dies when I tried to load a native effect with dualcore support ON, does Live actually notice it's crashed (I get an Ableton error message instead of just the plain old Windows Dr. Watson message).

So there seems to be something wrong with the way Live 6 handles dualcore systems (I even upgraded my studio machine to take advantage of Live 6's new ability... go figure... )

Anyway, I can manage for now (though it's annoying to never be sure whether it's going to fail me when I load a reverb or something).

But I just wondered... are there any other people with a dualcore pc on Windows that experience crashes like this and have to (temporarily) turn off the dualcore support? <-- I'm soooo glad they made a button for it...

Lars

PS
It's a 3,4 GHz Pentium 940, 2 gigabytes of dualchannel ram and the ESI ESP1010 soundcard. Everything is up to speed with the latest drivers and it's squeaky clean since I use my iMac for gaming and surfing...
