Wave Redraw issues with large files

Hello,
When I try to load some wave files (about 45 minutes in length) Live 3.0 takes FOREVER to draw the wave file in the arrangment.
Everything seems to "cludge" up.
Using Windows XP, AMDAthlon XP 2800+
1.5 gig DDR ram,
Firewire drive
Matrox G550 DVI card
Files are 24/96 waves.

45 min in length??!!!
music? or an audio book?

a 45 min contigous file will
be a chore for any program to draw and redraw

Music
Transfers from a 4track cassette recorder. about 8 songs. I have zero issues with Vegas or Soundforge.
Opens and draws the waves in seconds.
I wanted to give Live a try for the time stretching / pitch work I need to do.
I will just have to stick with Vegas for now.
