Transposing by midi notes

Post by Akribik » Sun Dec 03, 2006 6:27 pm

Hello AL's,
i wonder if i can transpose by midi keys instead of turning a knob?

What i'm lookin for is similar to the idea of that new vestax turntable, where you can live transpose(pitchshift) any records output by keyvalues like cdefgab(h).
I want to transpose any samplematerial by the keyboards midikeys like setting a midikeyrange from c1-c2. i want to press play and play midikeys and this should transpose(pitchshift) the audiomaterial live while the audiomaterial plays, without using the mouse. I hope you get what i want to do with it... 8O

If that doesn't work by live itself, do you know any other vst or tool that allows me to do that?

Hint in Section 23.2.2 of Live 6 manual, p. 335. Use clip slots in Session view.

It doesn't work for me. I can assign two octaves to the transpose knob, but nothing happens when i press a key! This works with other knobs, but not with the transpose one!

can someone PLEASE test this and let me know if it works? PLEASE, this is important to me!

Don't you have to assign a range to the clip? For, instance, press ctr+M to go into mapping mode then click your clip and then hit a key on your keyboard, hold it and then hit another one to define a range(then ctr+M again). Then when you hit the mapped keys and the clip will be transposed accordingly.

@geo:
I assigend a whole octave! what do you think i did, when i assigned an octave?? An octave is a range of 12 keys! I even tried that with 36keys(3 octaves)

@spiralgroove: I know that transpose won't work in pitchmode! Did you read my post at all??

So once again: I can assign two octaves(a midikeyrange of 24keys) to the transpose knob, but nothing happens when i press a key! This works with other knobs, but not with the transpose one!

C'mon someone PLEASE test this! Its not even a minute of your time!

drop the clip in session

open midi map

do the octave thing TO THE SESSION CLIP not the transpose knob

play the clip with your keyboard

(put it in legato if you dont want it to retrigger i think)

control movements are relative, maybe you need to set the knob at -12 or +12?

yeah man you are right! the assignment works from where the kob is at! When i set it to -12 it starts from there! almost perfect, but i can live with that! Thats a perfect feature for live sessions! Cos sometimes i have to jump to a certain transposition like from -8 to +3 without the steps between!

I was about to buy that vestax turntable just for that limited feature! i now saved 1000$+ cos of you and ableton!!! Thanks again! :D

This should be in the tips & tricks sticky!

if i'm following this correctly,

when you make the midi assignment to the clip,

1 - press the key you want to be the ROOT, HOLD IT DOWN...
2- then press the key you want to be the LOWEST, release, (keep holding the root key)
3- then press the key you want to be the HIGHEST

now you've got the key range.

yes!

glad someone's on the same wavelength as me - great idea!

hehehe - i've been using a pitch shifting plug in in live controlled by my midi keyboard to try and use my turntable like a C1 with mixed results.

i've even considered tryna build summat better in supercollider or max/msp

this sounds better and i'll give it a shot when i'm back home.

thank you all - should def go in the tips and tricks cos i think there'll be a lot of people interested in this type of thing.
