help with trigger finger

Post by azxjonx » Sat Dec 30, 2006 6:06 am

hey guys, im totally new to these forums, just stumbled across them and thought i would ask for a little help :D

anyways, i got a trigger finger for Christmas, after seeing the commercial for it on youtube, i really wanted one! however, it too me quite a while to find out how to even make noise with it hahaha. so i e-mailed m-audio asking for help and found out how to make basic drum beats and stuff, but now i stumbled on alot of other questions. in the commercial, i cant even find the same drum kit that makes the noises for the beats the guy makes! is there a way to go download new sounds? and, how do you preset sliders and knobs? last question, what does enigma actually do? i downloaded the idrum and stuff to my triggerfinger, but it doesnt seem to do anything at all...

please help me asap, and i'll try my best to help out this community as much as possible :D

Trigger Finger setup with iDrum and Live Lite

Post by mattmc95 » Thu Jan 04, 2007 5:44 am

I was once in the same situation and had to figure all of this out myself, the hard way. (Never ever got a reply from M-Audio either). Hope this helps you make the beats you want--and saves you at least a few curse words:

How to use iDrum with Trigger Finger
by Mattmc95

1) Install Ableton Live Lite (CD came with Trigger Finger, or download updated version from ableton.com)

2) Download and install Enigma from m-audio.com

3) Plug in your Trigger Finger via USB

4) Open Enigma and in the top window that lists various “defaults,” scroll down and click on “Trigger Finger Defaults”

5) The bottom window will show various presets; click on “Ableton Live Setup.” This should upload the settings to your Trigger Finger, and may take a moment.

6) Open Ableton Live Lite

7) Your Channel #2 in the default song loaded should read “MIDI.”

8) Go up top “Live” menu drop-down (before “File,” etc.) and click on “Preferences’

9) Click on MIDI on the far left, then in the middle column called “Input,” click and scroll down to choose “Trigger Finger.”

10) Then in the “MIDI Ports” section below that, be sure that Trigger Finger is checked “On” for both “Track” and Sync”

11) Click out of “Preferences” and go back to MIDI/Channel 2. About halfway down that channel, you should see the words “MIDI From.”

12) Below that, in the heading called “Monitor,” there are three boxes. Click on “In.”

13) On the column of icons on your far left, you should have 3 folders titled “1,” “2”, etc. Above that one should be an icon that looks like an electrical plug, for “Plug-Ins.” Click on that and look for the iZotope folder.

14) Click on the iZotope folder, and there you should find an “AU” icon for “iDrum” Double-click it or drag the icon into Channel 2/”MIDI” on the right.

15) iDrum should appear!

16) Hit the space bar to be sure you’re getting sound from iDrum.

17) If it’s working, then it’s time to sync up iDrum with Trigger Finger.

18) Click on any one track on iDrum, like the Bass Drum, and be sure it’s highlighted.

19) On the bottom of iDrum, there’s a button that looks like an “i” for “Info” Click on it, and a box with options should appear from the far right.

20) There’s a box in the middle called “Mapping.” Click on the “Auto Map” button, then it should say “Waiting for MIDI”

21) Then hit the pad you want to use for the bass drum on the Trigger Finger. This should sync it up! Then go through the rest of the drum parts/channels, using different pads for each.

22) For setting up the knobs and sliders, it’s even easier. Go to the top menu bar in the Live window, and click on the “MIDI” box next to “Key,” etc. This should highlight most of the Live buttons in blue.

23) Simply click on the parameter you want to link to a knob or slider, then move the knob or slider on the Trigger Finger.

24) This is great for linking a knob or slider to an effect.

25) You can also use one of the Trigger Finger pads to turn a loop on or off in the “Session” view.

26) You can also use one of the sliders to crossfade between two or more channels, for DJ fades, etc. One channel, click the “A” button at the bottom, then click “B” on another, then on the very bottom of the “Master” channel, below the “Track Delay” box, there’s a slider thing with a triangle on it Click on the “MIDI” button again at the top to highlight it in blue, then slide the slider you want to use. Instant crossfader!

27) You can’t save much with Live Lite, but be sure to click on the little folder icon at the top right of the iDrum window, and then title and save your beats!
