Newbie cannot record, all i get is feedback

Hi, I am brand new to live. all previous recording I've done is with soundforge. I am trying to record via a microphone plugged into a makie mixer plugged into my computer, no audio interface yet. I have no problems recording to soundforge with this setup, but every time I arm a track in Live the feedback loop begins. also, ive checked out some tutorials, and the screen shots they show a panel in the track column that says "audio from" with a pull down menu, "monitor" "audio to", and on the bottom above the solo button and record arming button is a button with a speaker. All of these are nonexistant on my screen. I cant figure any of this out. does anyone have any advice? thanks

There is a little black circle on the right hand side of the screen with the text I-O. Clicking on this will bring up the I-O options for each channel...
