Live 3 and loops/audio from CDs

Post by SlowX » Mon Dec 01, 2003 3:11 pm

Hi,

I'm thinking of upgrading to Live 3, but am wondering about one feature:
When you create a new set using loops or other audio from a CD, and then save that set to your hard drive, will it transfer the audio file to your hard drive, or will it just keep a link to the CD?

Live 1 allowed for copying the files from CD to your hard drive (which is what I want), but then the 1.5 upgrade just created links.

I have tons of loop CDs from my ACID days that I'd like to be able to easily use in Live. But if I create a set w/ a bunch of loops from a bunch of CDs, it'd be a real pain to have to manually load them to my hard drive, or reload each CD.

Thanks in advance for feedback!
:)

live 3 has an option to "save set as self-contained", which will place a session file into the directory you specify when saving, along with another folder that contains copies of all of the audio files/samples referenced in your live set. this is how i save practically all of my live sets, so i can archive them easily, take them into another studio or swap to another computer.

hope this helps,

it's better to copy all your files in the CD to the hard disk, it's not that difficult. normally copying all the files would take about 3-4 minutes or less. when u are finished composing your live set, just hit 'save as Set' and all the files/clips youve used will be saved/duplicated in a new folder. then just get rid of the other files that you dont want after that ;)

OK, just to be clear, previous versions of Live also had a "save as self-contained set" option, but it didn't copy material off of a CD to the hard drive.

This Guest's reply makes it sound like Live 3 WILL copy from a CD:
>>live 3 has an option to "save set as self-contained", which will place a session file into the directory you specify when saving, along with another folder that contains copies of all of the audio files/samples referenced in your live set.<<

And mazingerph's reply offers a suggestion for a more efficient way:
>>it's better to copy all your files in the CD to the hard disk...<<
I sometimes work off a bunch of CDs and would rather not have to copy all of them manually to my hard drive.

But the bottom line is that saving as a self-contained set WILL copy files from a CD if used in the set, right?

Thanks again, and sorry to be so thick!

sorry if i was unclear in my earlier "guest" post. as far as i know, live will not save files directly off of the CD when you are saving a set/session - although someone please correct me if i'm wrong on this. i've always been under the impression that you have to copy files to your hard drive before they'll save automatically in your self-contained set. can't say for certain as i haven't tried it personally. perhaps someone else here has.

i typically just copy over any samples i'm inteterested in using from a sample cd or sound library to the hard drive. i realize if you are working primarily with sample/loop based CDs, then you may not want to copy them all over to the hard drive if it's just going to be wasting disc space.

i'm not in the studio right now, otherwise i would give it a try. i'm sure someone will be able to provide an answer on this.
