Live Looping- Multiple inputs/ Soft synths

Post by viajero » Tue Mar 13, 2007 4:40 am

I'm a keyboardist trying to free up the creative process for more improvisatory recording of performances on multiple keyboard inputs and plug-in soft synths... I'm fairly new to the Live world, but have searched around the forum with no luck. Basically, I want to be able to perform on any plug-in/ instrument in an improvisatory fashion, hit a foot pedal or controller button and record on track one, then move to be performing on any other instrument/ or the same one again and record on track two.... and so forth.

My solution thus far has been to send all inputs to a "router" track which monitors the performance and sends everything to 8 record enabled tracks with the monitor set to off. After recording, each one instantly starts playing back- it works perfect: EXCEPT: the latency is doubling, and it effects what I hear on the monitored track, completely taking the feel out the performance. (can be corrected after being recorded with track delay, but I know this is all just too convoluted to be the way people are doing this)

This doesn't make sense to me since the routing is all internal, but I have to chalk it up to being new to this. Anybody out there doing anything similar or have any recommendations? Would be much appreciated.

(Eventually plan to integrate this into a live band setting... one step at a time here!)

This is just the tip of the iceberg. Try a search for "live looping" and you'll find lots of resources. Basically you'll have to get a midi foot controller and probably some sort of free midi translation software, all of which is explained in these threads. Hope this helps.
