Creating big thick fatty baselines?

Post by jamie3 » Thu Mar 15, 2007 1:10 am

i am a progressive lover by nature but enjoy producing other genres.

wondering if anyone had tips on creating heavy, thick, fatty baselines (as this has been my biggest difficulty) in live.

thanks!

Usually it's actually really simple in terms of the synthesis involved. The biggest basslines lines seem to be the simplest in terms of tone. Try layering a sine wave that doubles your bassline underneath it, maybe dropped an octave. Really nice compressors can help somewhat, crappy ones can hurt a lot so go easy.

i'm really big on the combo lopass (sub) + hipass (top) riffs. the idea is to make your brain combine two tones into one 'sound'. it's a lot easier that way, and you can get all fancy with the textures if you like.

keep your subs to simple waves only though. there really isn't much room for monkeybusiness down there.
