user remote scripts, instant mapping, Mackie Control oh my!
user remote scripts, instant mapping, Mackie Control oh my!
Using search and combing through threads is giving me a headache. Anyone know of a straightforward tutorial on how to set up automap?
Thanks!
Thanks!

Ah ok the correct terminology is "user remote scripts" "instant mapping"
It's simple.
Here's what you do:
Create a folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR USERNAME>\Application Data\Ableton\Live <VERSION NUMBER>\Preferences\User Remote Scripts\Test Instant Mappings
Copy this file into that folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\<YOUR USERNAME>\Application Data\Ableton\Live <VERSION NUMBER>\Preferences\User Remote Scripts\UserConfiguration.txt
Then edit that file you copied. That file has comments explaining what you need to do. How do you find what midi number to replace the -1 with? As long as your device has the remote box checked in the options>preferences you can enter midi learn mode and tweak a knob to see the number to replace the -1 with. Just remember to delete the midi mapping after your done twiddle the knob to get its number.
Interesting to note: you can hook up more than one "controler" (ie automap) to the same "input" (ie device) in the preferences. Anything that conflicts is resolved with the controler map higher in the stack as winning. So you might be able to get creative with how you assign things if you need various "mappings" that you sometimes need in certain circumstances.
However... the userConfiguration options don't seem as sexy as pretending your device is a Mackie Control (much less options... unless I'm wrong and then someone please correct me! Can I navigate around and select clips and undo etc using the UserConfiguration???? I don't think so, right?)
So I'm probably going to pretend my device is a mackie control and then map my controller to output the cc's and midi notes the mackie control would do and kiss the userConfiguration instant mapping goodbye as its a less than useful symbol of the goodness to come with Ableton Live 7 (hopefully):

Re: custom automapping tutorial?
bump from the ancient past...
I knew I collected this info a while ago, didn't remember it at all... figured this might be news to newbies (and forgetful fools like me).

let's say i want to assign this control to a specific MIDI CC and channel (say, CC 5 and channel
the comments in the file say that i can specify a new CC and channel. but what is the syntax for that? 5:8 ? 5/8? 5.8? 5 8? 5-8?StopButton: -1
