I want a DJ app that I can code
while I am playing stuff.
I want to be able to write stuff in code, like, start at this bar, at this BPM, of this song, and then I can control all the filters, eqs, flanges, from a USB controller?
How cool would that be.
Everyone would think that you are emailing someone, but in fact, you are coding the whole set. It would be like Ableton meets a tracker. I think that Cycling '74 and Ableton could give us something like that. You could check a tracks waveform, know when you would like to drop it, and code that in.
It would be uber-geekiness!!!!!!
Yep, that is what is coming, then you could code some rack that would drop in the track, and then you could take it out (you could say (drop this effect rack for 16 bars, then take it out) so you could put another one in for the next transiition.
That is where I see things going. Ableton incorporating some tracker goodness but in a purely Ableton way.
Best,
AB

Yay! Someone who is out there and thinking that there has got to be something that we can do to really turn this shit on its head. I mean, there is so much power in all of our apps, and how can we tie it all together? I mean, with certain applications, like quicksliver, and automator, we can quickly perform, or automate, so many things, why can't this be available to us?sweetjesus wrote:anti-banausic wrote:while I am playing stuff.

We need some more forward thinking shit, like Ableton was 5-6 years ago. I am hoping that the partnership with cycling really does this. Not to throw anything in Ableton's face. They surely are THE app that others have begun to emulate, and they have pushed the envelope as far as music production, but let's take the next step.

having met the ableton's their ethos is they would rather do something right than to do a half ass version.anti-banausic wrote:Yay! to be honest i see almost (bot not quite) complete features in all versions of Live so to me, seeing something change isn't going to be as bad as not having it in the first place.
so pleeease give us cool shit...

Duly noted. Thanks for the heads up. I will check it out!Clearscreen wrote:maybe this is for you?

I agree with SJ, I am always absolutely behind the Abe's. They have given me this app, and all the goodness that it is. And I am probably the worst in using what they give. Especially given that, when composing, I try to keep things simple, yet sincere and beautiful. I haven't ever uploaded anything. That is because I really want my stuff to be very polished and beautiful before I put it out there, and I basically suck. But, I can see some very cool stuff that will be to come.
User coded macros could be a very cool idea, but I think that allowing people to put together a performance between coding in emacs, or other coding programs, and the versatility of USB interfaces could be spot on.

you might find this interesting, but it's not exactly a DJ thing, but it is real time coding on stage

Thanks again. Another good one. This one seems pretty cool. I will have to check it out further.forge wrote:you might find this interesting, but it's not exactly a DJ thing, but it is real time coding on stage

I guess this wasn't such a bad post after all. I didn't think it would garner much attention.

I'm doing a course at Uni called "computational arts" which will use it - in my first year I have to do 2 IT programming units first, then we get into that next yearanti-banausic wrote:Thanks again. I'm going next week to see the guy who wrote this with the guy who runs the course use it in action - so I'll let you know how it goes!

Please do. This seems like the next BEST idea. I really shows some forward thinking, and some uber-geekiness, as said before. For all of us who have some programming experience, even though mine is in statistics, it would be really cool.forge wrote:I'm doing a course at Uni called "computational arts" which will use it - in my first year I have to do 2 IT programming units first, then we get into that next yearanti-banausic wrote:Thanks again. Check this, I can type a few lines, and voila, this track drops, and I can control the filter with a line of code, and then I can drop the next track, and drop the bass eq by X amount just by typing it in.
I mean, how cool would that be? And if you had this much control over the environment with the keyboard, and had an app like quicksilver that would work in it, you could use any USB device, or the trackpad as "Interceptor" has desired for other things.
It would be the hotness.

That is a great idea - I totally just decided to add some text-based changes to my max patch. By the way, here's a quick example of what is easily done in max - the patch here has text-based control over distortion amount and filter cutoff on 4 tracks. The Code is launched when you hit enter, so you can type in long lists of changes you need and then execute them when you want. And of course the code can be "banged out" by an external clock, for instance on the 17th bar, etc. Here the bass filter is cut by 50 and the drum distortion is turned up by 10. There are a few simple trigger objects missing in this code, but you get the idea - It only took two minutes to program.anti-banausic wrote:Check this, I can type a few lines, and voila, this track drops, and I can control the filter with a line of code, and then I can drop the next track, and drop the bass eq by X amount just by typing it in.

I think max/MSP is one of those amazing worlds I've for some unknown reason never quite made it into - the dumbest refund I ever got (I bought it once - one of my ahem...drunk credit card experiences...then asked for my money back the next day in the cold light of sobriety before I unlocked it, but I wish I'd kept it now
mind you it probably would have just sat there until now when I'm only just starting to get into the idea of that kind of depth
the idea of being able to mainline straight into the code could have some awesome prospects if you knew what you were doing
