Macbook Pro USB issues
I'm currently doing some swotting up on all things Mac before my shiny new MBP arrives, and saw this article: http://www.maudio.co.uk/index.php?do=su ... 0652bc9655
Is this common knowledge, or just an obscure precautionary measure?
Also, is it worth me reformatting the comp without the extra languages, etc to slim down the installation? I've never owned a Mac before, but just remember the amount of spammy crap pre-installed on previous PCs i've had.
Any other recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks

i use my trigger finger in the right port (my Uc33e on the left) and have no issues. Don't know about Audio devices.
There is very little you need to worry about to optimize Mac Os X. When you're playing live i find its a good idea to turn off Networking entirely. Feel free to delete all the languages and printer drivers you don't need, but that will only give you back some hard disk space. Always make sure you keep at least 10% of your hard disk free. Do a Disk permissions check after installing any software maybe. To be honest Os X works pretty hard at keeping itself optimized. You won't get any spammy crap installed on a new mac

The right-side USB port is supposed to be unsupported because it shares the USB bus with the trackpad (could be completely wrong, that's just what I heard from a friend in tech support). I haven't tested to see if using a bluetooth mouse would make any difference, but there's an option if it applies to you. But in the end, sticking to what is supported will make your life easier.
I've used dongles and flash drives on the right-side with no issues, so it seems like just audio devices [so far] that have issues with it.

Format the HD, when installing the software go into custom setup mode, just observe how much space some of the crap included software takes. For example - Garageband takes over 2gb of space. The UBERape wrote:

I just installed the OSX and mail and a few others that dont require so much space. saved around 10gb, which is a lot when you havnt got it.
The software will ask you if you want to clean out "architectures".... this is where you should just move on!robin wrote:I've heard of this removing Rosetta so I'd be careful. Otherwise clearing that stuff out saves a bit of space yeah.anti-banausic wrote:Yeah, just get rid of extra languages using monolingual, and you can probably get rid of the printer drivers, they take up a fair amount of space.
I've learnt that lesson on my minimacIntel, and it's now intel-only
mbp 2.66, osx 10.6.8, 8GB ram.
or rather; not drawing enough current from the port...Daim wrote:propably because u are using usb 2.0 devicesJJHP3 wrote:FWIW- there are always a few folks who have some problem with something not working... I have NO problem with either USB port on my MBP C2D doing audio.

Right port supplies more power
My portable USB HD can only be bus powered from the right port on my MBP C2D. Same with a friend's CD.
Other than the bus powering issue, I've been able to use USB 2 audio devices without an issue.
