Live 6.0.5 + Remote SL Midi mapping problems!! ???

Post by 3rdordertrauma » Wed May 02, 2007 5:51 am

I have been using 2 remotes SL zeros with Ableton for quite some time now with no issues to speak of really. But today for some reason I ran into trouble.

I opened a new session went to map some midi note numbers to the clips slots. I'm on os x so I hit apple+M to enter midi map mode. I select the first clip in track 1 and then hit the first pad on the SL. All is fine so far, and the note appears on the clip slot as it should. Here is where the trouble starts... I select the next clip and then hit the next pad on the SL to assign it. NOTHING happens... After selecting the next clip its seems Live does not receive midi anymore. If I exit midi map mode then go back to midi map mode select the second clip and hit the second pad, it assigns fine!! Basically all I get is one assignment per time I enter midi map mode. I could progressively make all of my assignments this way, only after each time I make one assignment I must exit midi-map mode then re-enter midi-map mode for next assignment.

This is frustrating!! I've never had this problem in the past. If anyone has any insights I'd really appreciate it!

Cheers!

yeah, i had the same problem.
i also noticed that if i assign a note (say C-2) on the "pie" of track 1, it will work ok, but if assign the next note to the pie of track 2, it will say C-2/D-2; for track 3 C-2/E-2 etc....
but if i switch Ctrl-M on and off between each assignment, then it will work "normally".

so it's not as if the notes stopped working after the first assignment, but as i they were constantly working.

Peeddrroo I've noticed very similar behavior... So are you also using a novation remoteSL? Connected via USB?

I've tried a few other experiments. First was delete my version of Live and re-install... nothing changed. Next was launch an old version of live (5.2.2) and try the same thing, nothing changed! Last I turned the remote SL's off and using the midi i/o from my audio interface (fireface 800) I connected a SPS-1 machinedrum which outputs midi notes for each of the 16 drum parts. These assigned as they should with NO PROBLEMS! So for me it appears to be an issue with the remoteSL somewhere. I've even tried an OS update on the SL's and still no luck using the SL's.

My next experiment is to use the midi output on the SL's instead of the USB and see what happens.

Cheers, let me now what you find!

EDIT:
I tried the midi output from the remote SL into the input of the Fireface 800 and no luck there either.

Another side note to anyone experiencing this problem. Notice the midi input indicator in the top right of the Live. (a green indicator in the default skin) Once in midi map mode I've noticed, after the one and only assignment that i can get each time entering midi map mode, the indicator shows no further midi input signal. As if Live is not receiving midi any longer.

Now here is another interesting part. I'm unable to assign any midi notes to a selected clip but if a grab a knob and tweak that the midi comes through fine and assigns a CC# to a clip. Then if I go back to the midi note I was trying to assign and hit that pad it lists multiple midi note numbers as if all the ones I pressed prior whilst trying to assign a clip have been stack up in a buffer then dumped in one press of a pad.

I'm going to kill myself. Are you both describing failure of novation's lauded automapping feature that I just paid $500 for (37SL ReMOTE)? Mine's still in the box and I dont want to install, map it and wrap it if Live's latest code barfs it up and potentially becomes corrupted.

Will someone from Ableton please comment on this.

Thanks,
-Mark

Well I should tell you Mark I'm not using the Automap feature on the RemoteSL's I've built all my own templates from scratch. And regardless of this problem I am having the controllers work like a dream. Having 2 RemoteSl zero's side by side for live performance has been the best setup I've used so far. NOT perfect! But working very well!

I used almost every controller under the sun with the exception of a few I'd really like to try like the Bitstream3x, the new Korg Zero 4 & 8 and maybe a custom home made something or other. And I'm very happy with the RemoteSL in total!

So don't lose hope on your new SL37 yet!

But yes it would be great to hear some feedback from Ableton on this... or maybe we are barking up the wrong tree and should get on a Novation forum.

I emailed novation this morning. 'will keep you posted to be sure. I emailed Ableton as well but, well, my mom always told me not to hold my breath so I'm doing it and I've got one heck of a buzz on . . .

I'm baffled by your dilemma. You manually mapped? Put Live in "learn" mode, clicked something then spun a dial? Am I close or not at all. I need to re-write novation and I want to be accurate with them. It's shaming to bitch about this and that only to find out it was your ignorance giving you grief. I hate that.

I'm curious; what do you prefer about your own templates over the automapping feature?

Take Care,
-Mark

Well I specifically bought the SL's for live performance. I think the automap feature is great for maybe studio work and mixing in the studio. However I found myself needing to use Live a bit differently than the auto map function allows. I think maybe it would be cool to program your own automaps if its possible but I haven't bothered yet. By creating my own template I mean in the Remote SL's themselves... I used the bundled template editor and laid out 13 different templates... 8 tracks, 4 returns and 1 master. These templates are all one button press away by using the buttons just below the faders as "hoykeys" to each template. Thank fully the way I have Live setup now I don't use a clip trigger on each clip I only use the "global" play and stop buttons for each track. When I assigned all the functions in Live about 3 months ago everything went smooth as butter... never noticed this problem at all... but then again like I said I never tried to assign consecutive clips in a track. It wasn't till just a few days ago when I set off to try something different that I noticed this behavior.

Please keep me posted!! This is such a pain!

Good luck! Cheers!

@mark: the remoteSL is a very good product, don't be afraid about unwrapping it, and see what your problems are. then maybe you can contact the support teams.
but i don't see the point contacting them about problems you maybe won't have.

@3rdordertrauma: is it really a pain for you to switch midi mapping on and off when you map notes? i mean, if you do it just once in a while, it should be ok.
i'm not sure what the problem is, but i guess it comes from the remoteSL and not from Live.
it feels as if the buttons didn't send a note off when they are released.

OK were making progress!!! You're exactly right peeddrroo!! The pads on the SL don't send a note off. I downloaded a simple midi monitor program and in fact when hitting a pad on the SL only the note on signal comes through. Never a note off!

SOLUTION!! In the edit section of the Remote SL the drum notes have a option called "Auto-Off" This I guess is set to "OFF" by default, by setting this to "10" the pads send a note off 10ms after the note on. Go to the map page in Live and everything works as it should.

So Mark I'm guessing the keys on your SL37 will work just fine as is. As I'm sure the keyboard would be sending note offs.

Sidenote --> This is another kind of glitch I've found in the SL template editor... the editor allows you to assign a note on/off to each pad as well as something called "drumnote" but if you're editing the SL onboard you don't have the "note on-off" option only the option called "drumnote". Essentially the same thing as note on-off but has a few different parameters to set.

EDIT: OK correction the "Auto-Off" time can be set from 1ms to 16383ms. Ididn't see this at first cause I was using the encoder to change this value and that gives you 10ms increments, must use the buttons to change this value if you want 1ms increments.

Cheers!
