Synching vocals / remixing

Post by botkiller » Wed May 16, 2007 6:41 am

Hey all,

So, I've truthfully never done much remixing, and i'm getting into it now. I've got a big vocal track that I'm trying to sync up to a pretty simple 4/4 time signature - but I just can't seem to get my vocals to time right. Do you guys have input on how you go about timing vocals to tracks/using tempo markers/etc?

Thanks!

What I do is set a very short (1 bar loop) on the vocal track and use a click track or a kick drum. Then I set warp markers on each downbeat of the lyric. You can achieve some interesting effects by experimenting. Beware of so-called "pickup" notes. This is when a singer starts a verse with a few words before the downbeat hits, like, "open up you EYES." The all caps word is the actual downbeat.. so set your warp marker at the beginning of the "eyes" sound.

Follow this process bar by bar and it should work fine. Some lyrics are more rhythmic and others and therefore easier. Trying to sync old Jazz "scat" singing would be the most difficult end of the spectrum, hip hop lyrics would be the easiest because the style is very beat based.

This might not be the textbook answer, but it works for me..

Good luck.
