I'm new at this recording business so be easy on me.
I purchased the M-Audio FireWire 410 and MXL microphones to go along with Live 5 (which I have since upgraded to Live 6), using a Dell XPS M1710 laptop. Unfortunately, whenever I go to record, I am only able to get a few seconds of recording before the mic goes dead and I have to mess around with the input settings. This happens EVERY time. I have always had recording issues, but I simply let it slide at first, but I finally have had enough, so I came here for help. I've messed around with all kinds of settings, but nothing seems to work. I've looked through all the help and all the lessons found in the program, but nothing seems to help. If anybody has experienced something similar or can offer any help, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

oh dear
I've got exactly the same problem dude... I set audio-in to monitor, or record, or leave it armed, and after 5 seconds to 5 minutes all Live spits out of that track is a hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...
It seems it's a rare problem that only effects people with Dell laptops and the M-Audio Firewire 410. I've tried EVERYTHING to fix it, trust me... (IRQ settings, SpeedStep in XP, Driver versions, Asio4all, Disabling everything that isn't being used in Device Manager, different versions of Abeleton, Removing all VSTs.....)
Though now I think of it, the only thing I've not tried is to use the onboard soundcard and see if it still happens...
Anyway, on Saturday I'm buying a new firewire interface... Good luck fella.

Shoot me an email ([email protected]) if you're able to fix it. I doubt I'll be able to return the device and it was quite pricey, so I don't know if i'll be able to purchase a new one.
Good luck to you too, man.

who makes your firewire chipset? Check in control panel.
Firewire can be flaky on all PCs not just Dell because of the massive variations of chipsets. Texas Instruments seem to work best, ricoh and ene not so well. My Dell laptop (a slightly older Inspiron 9100) uses Texas Instruments.
Also, microsoft broke firewire in the sp2 ugrade of XP, reducing throughput to one quarter of what it was. There is a patch available which fixed that problem.
