sound probs with FW 410 in os 9

has anyone had difficulty with this combination?

I just got a 2nd hand PB and the ram is only 128 (I'm waiting on another 512 stick) but at the moment the sound from the 410 distorts cyclically (meaning it breaks up every second or even less.

RAM is certainly the issue here. Did you try it with Reason, which is not as greedy on this front as Live (providing you don't use large samples but only virtual instruments).
Which version of mac os do you run ? I've had big problems (had to x2 the buffer size compared to my previous configuration under Jag 10.2.7) with a FW410 on a new powerbook trying to use it with DP 4.11 and Live 3.01. But the pbook was also a nigthmare when running those apps on my usual motu 828. So I quickly got back to 10.2.7 as I suspected panther to be the culprit. So bad because the battery life had jumped from 2 hours (max) to 3 hours !! This is a bit short to justify a new OS, specially when it runs like it did for me. I had checked my energy saving settings, deactivated bluetooth, network, file sharing, blah blah blah, nothing changed. I'll reinstall the cat when it will hunt mice !!

Have you switched off virtual memory? What are your latency buffer settings?
