Focusrite Liquid Mix: Do You Like Yours?

Post by blakejarrell » Wed May 30, 2007 4:13 pm

...or should I even bother hunting one down for a listen?

Seems amazing for the price but my experience so far with such miracle boxes is not satisfactory. Im thinking this may be another well marketed piece of gear porn I dont need.

Prove me wrong so I can go further into debt

I've been reading up on it with seriousness......and have decided that personally, I don't want it.

a. Apparently, it's useless for any kind of guitar/bass input and just add's way too much latency. It's being dubbed as "mix" only thing......which is not the only need I personally have.

b. Another complaint I keep hearing is that there are actually too many choices. There is really no end to the models, and it's get tedius trying to get it right.

c. ......and this one just kills me.......you can't save the eq settings/keeping the comp or visa versa. This would drive me nuts.

The odd thing is that too me, this should be enough to keep anyone from wanting it.....but it's really poplar and even with these gripes, get's "knock out" reviews......

I'm a rather large fan of mine.

first off tho, i have heard some of the comps/EQs it emulates, it does capture alot of the sonic character but alas there isn't anything like the real thing (duende excluded). The latency thing can be abit annoying but really it hasnt managed to mess me up, cause i really only use it on mixdowns. If your looking for it for 'iive' performance then its probably not the best idea. Anyho, it sounds really kikass tho. The hardest thing to get your head around is what compressor/EQ to use and what to use it on. Picking, Mixing, and matching 60types can be abit hard @ first. After the first 2 weeks tho i figured out my bread and butter comp/EQ types. Trust me certains ones do stand out alot more than the rest (mainly the Urei, Manley, Dramer, Avalon, Distressor and Focusrite emulators).

things that suck bout the liquid mix:

its a firewire whore. If you have multiple firewire devices better hope u have 1 port u can give to your liquid mix otherwise u can forget about using it to its full potential. I tried hookin up the motu 828 and the liquid mix on the same port. I could load live session with the liquid already used in the session but i couldnt get the liquid to add new plugins in the session. Also when i played it back some times i would get a the audio to freakout for afew seconds then go back to normal. Now, ive got the liquid mix runnin off my firewire 800 port and my 828 on the firewire 400 port and *knocks on wood* it works like a charm.

hope my dollar and 59 cents helps abit.

I love mine. I'm not clued up about the qualities of the various eq/comp presets but I load up one of the vintage master emulations and tweak it till it sounds nice.

I have had some problems with the box freezing when loading up a new set but a quick restart solves that. I had some initial problems with an xp firewire driver but Focusrite support pointed me in the right direction really quickly and I was given a download link for the beta of the forthcoming update which adds a few more emulations.

I reckon it has improved the quality of my mixdown.

This is the first tune I made with the liquid mix.

sounds sweet to me......... 8)

If you are trying to emulate specific consoles, then it's great. If there's not a specific sound you're looking for, then I'd just stick to Waves. But, it does sound good and it is cool because it's hardware accelerated.. But far from essential.

Will it improve your sound? Not likely in any dramatic way. If you're doing fine with Waves, etc., Liquid Mix isn't really that important. I do like the hardware controller of Liquid Mix though..

Of course, this is all just personal opinion..

Read the Remix Mag review of it for more information about the specifics..

I love it. But it makes Live crash at startup about 50% of the time. Hopefully it will be more solid in 2.0.
