MacBook Pro @ AppleStore $3,644.35! Damn!

That's a 17" with the 7200 drive ($150), High Res screen ($100), AppleCare ($349) and $240 in tax. Seems steep.
Add another 2 gig of ram purchased separately and it's almost 4 grand. That's close to double what I paid for a new 15" G4 lappie 2 years ago. Time to go bargain hunting, or buy a last generation model.

I feel your pain. I'm sitting here with a Core 2 Duo that set me back almost $3200. I figure that XMas '08 I'll be looking at about $4K for my next "indulgence". Damn.nowtime wrote:That's with the 7200 drive ($150), High Res screen ($100), AppleCare ($349) and $240 in tax. Seems steep.

Oh, wait. That's about $500 less than a Mac II w/HD cost 20 years ago...
I'm so confused.
Computers. Can't live with them. Can't live without them.

Don't buy the hard drive from them. First off you can find a 7200 rpm for 150 these days, so straight off you get the extra drive they supply to sell, or house in an external case for back up.
No need to buy Apple Care until right before the initial one year warranty runs out.
The screen is worth the $100 though.
So my price for the same model would be $2899

Doesn't swapping the HD yourself/somewhere else void the warranty?Machinesworking wrote:Don't buy the hard drive from them. First off you can find a 7200 rpm for 150 these days, so straight off you get the extra drive they supply to sell, or house in an external case for back up.

$2899 Much better.
Then again, if I look at it as if I was buying a powerful desktop (which by all accounts it is a powerhouse) the price doesn't seem so bad
I never understand the whole Mac vs. PC argument. Who fuckin cares? I love Macs. I don't care what you like. If you like something else... great! Doesn't mean I have to, and you don't have to like what I like. It equates to someone arguing about what flavor of Doritos they like best. Anyways, cheerio.

I agree, though on a personal note, I think PC's are a better value in the desktops, and macs are better notebooks period.Thinktanx wrote:I never understand the whole Mac vs. PC argument. One thing's for sure though, my PowerBook G4 doesn't play well with Live 6's new instruments or Operator if much else is going on.
I was cruising along just fine with my G4 until I discovered the hidden delights of operator and sampler. I'm gonna allow a 1 month "cooling off period" before springing for the new mbp.
..... . . . . . . . . .
MBP's are the same price as they were before. Don't compare a 17" maxed out with a 15" G4 PB.
15" PB's were $1999 retail. 15" MBP's still are, and they're much, much faster, with higher resolution screen and good battery life.
The last bump was a pretty significant one -- LED backlit screens on the 15" model, 2gb RAM (up from 1gb), new video card, Santa Rosa chipset. Add the 10% off educational discounts, no-tax from Amazon + Amazon rebates, or the 20% off developer/refurb discount and you're good to go.
EDIT: However, my next MBP will be a 17". That new screen, drool..........

at some point I decided to go to the apple store and build my own computer, I wanted to see what the best of the best of the best costed with all the bells and whistles thrown in. 11,000 bucks and some change for a maxed out 8core(I think it was 8... maybe 4?) with applecare and the best monitor and harddrives and all that crap + tax
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.
