Upgrade to 10.4.9 on a powerbook g4?

Post by djofonunez » Sun Jun 17, 2007 3:49 am

Hey ppl how are you?
Ive been debating for the past couple of days about upgrading my os x system currently handling 10.4.5 it has always responded magnificently on my powerbook g4 and ableton on iive situations. I wanted to see if any of you guys had 10.4.9 on a

powerbook g4 15 inch
1gb of Ram
1.67ghz

And if you guys had any special ritual on updating your os x, I have read of many ways but wanted to go straight to the source. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your time,
Ofo

Same setup here running x.4.9 and no problems. If you want to be really sure make a backup first using carboncopycloner so you can revert if you're not happy. Before and after upgrading make sure to repair permissions and keep doing the software update until there's nothing you want left to do, as it doensn't seem to do it all in one go sometimes.

Word of caution.....

I upgraded my G4 Powerbook to 10.4.9 and it wouldn't start. I didn't have the foresight to carbon clone it! Upps!!! But I did get everything back by doing an install in place from the DVD and then upgraded back to 10.4.8

Since then I have replaced my hard drive and I still haven't gotten to 10.4.9

Personally I don't need anything that 10.4.9 offers me. Do you?

Until I can't run the latest version of Live or Logic I guess I'll stay put. (also 10.4.10 is tabled to be on the horizon.)

I'm running 10.4.9 on a 15" G4 1.25 ghz with no problems. However, my powerbook does not see a whole lot of action with ableton lately because I have not done a live gig for a wile. I'ts primarilly a serato machine now.

I'm one to keep the OS on my computers up to date, but if your powerbook is a dedicated audio computer I'd go with jesQuicks advice. Why bother if it is running fine.

On the other hand, if you do decide to update and want to play it safe download the OS update direct from apples website and install it yourself. Repair permissions immediately and you should be fine.

I don't know if it was the update to 10.4.9 but right around the time I updated to 10.4.9 I noticed almost none of my 3rd party pluggos worked anymore. after talking to cycling74 for a while about it it turns out there is nothing they can do about it and I have to wait for updates from the developers of the pluggos. I highly suspect this was due to my 10.4.9 update, and no version of pluggo runtime seems to remedy it.
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

Yeah, no problems here (10.4.9 on 1.5GHz G4 / 1.5 GB RAM)...

That's how it always is with apple. Developers can't work on any new updates from Apple until they're released. So a good rule of thumb is to disable automatic updates and just hold on to the latest supported OS and wait til the new versions of your plug-ins/sequencer are released. I'm sure there's going to be a nice long lag once 10.5/Leopard comes out.
