getting that french sound?

Working on a track, using a few loops and my own bass line,. I want to get that Stardust - music sounds better kind of sound to it. Any ideas?

yup. side chain compression. in fact that is the entire basis of the french house sound. i would argue that you don't even need any instruments. just a bass drum side chaining white noise and there you go.

most of those 90s french house loops used a little bit of sample/bit reduction. def. try a compressor as everyone recommends (i prefer compressorII), BUT put the "redux" effect somewhere (before or after) as well ... you might want to try a little bit of the "soft" redux option w/ a little bit of bit reduction (12bit) ... (be careful not to overdrive the bit redux, it will clip!)
