1st of all you need to make sure live recognises your controller, when you press a key does the midi indicater light flash? its in the top right hand corner of the screen.
if it does all you have to do is is click on the midi icon in the top right hand corner and everything you can controll with the controller turns blue.
then if you click on the launch button of the clip you want to launch then press the key you want to launch it with on your controller it will assign it.
then click on the midi icon again to exit midi mapping and it should work

It depends on which controller your using,
have you installed the drivers as some need them and some don't.
and have you set the controller up? it's done in the Midi/synk section of the preferences if i recall

additional question:

what happens if you want to record additional midi parts after youve selected some keys that will toggle parts on/off, will these keys now be inactive?

hmmm not sure,
i tend to use my mpd16 for launching clips and samples which leaves my keyboard free so it's never cropped up 8O

yeh you can use any computer keyboard just select the key icon thats next to the midi icon top right and map your computer keyboard,
i think you can use them both together but not sure as i've never done it

that button is for using the keyboard to play NOTES

no need to use that to launch clips, just use the key mapping mode instead of MIDI mapping mode
