QuickTime Music Synthesizer alternative on OSX?

Does anyone here know about an alternative to the QuickTime Music Synthesizer in Mac OSX?

I have recently collectet alot of Quicktime karaoke files (.kar) for my wife, she likes to sing alot. They use the QuickTime Music Synthesizer included in QuickTime to playback the MIDI soundtrack in the file. Problem is that the QTMS sounds like s**t.

Anybody know alternatives?

G5/10.4.9/QT 7.1.6 Pro

Presumably it is possible to get any general midi synthesizer to work for this, and in that case something like NI bandstand would sound a whole lot better. I don't know what would be involved in getting it set up though. (Perhaps a bit overkill...)
