A Very Un-Inspiring set Seen on mpc/ turntables

I'm posting this not to bash this group, I'm posting this because this is what laptop performances usually look like..... all these dudes look like they're checkin email and if I'd bought a ticket I'd want my money back.

this is a video not about laptop djing that illustrates exactly why laptop djs should really think about how they perform because as you can see even with hardware instruments your performance can suck royaly, so what makes us think that doin this on a laptop would suck any less.

I would agree, even if they were jumping up an down!

Personally when it comes to music i couldnt give a shit what the djs do for the eye's... vj's are a different story though.

that's my point YiLa, it's live .... have you ever seen something Live that was so dead, they look like they're noodling around after just opening up the boxes the equiptment came in, you know the noodling you do before you plug it in for the first time.

leisuremuffin: again thats just the point, hell yeah the wwf is way more entertaining than that vid and I don't even like wrestling.

mr. man i totally agree, if 'they' were jumping up and down i think it would have been not that good since the music they were playing is pretty crappy, nothing personal just my opinion.

the point is imho that if the music is great and the performance sucks then it takes away from the music.
I have nothing against artist that don't perform or like to perform as long as they don't perform, but don't have people spend their hard earned gas money to go buy a ticket to see you and then come see some crap like that
if you don't like to perform why not just release CDs

Watching this performance, what would you have done differently to make it more entertaining? They do look bored I totally agree, but I am not too sure what they could have done differently to make it much more entertaining, since it was a downtempo tune from begin with.

Honestly, I think they look fine. The DJ is doing interesting things and one of the guys is playing an upright bass. As long as someone is doing some instrumentation and/or beat juggling - there is plenty of action going on.

I too think it's kind've weird to worry about "seeing" the musicians at all times. I can't really get into a groove (i.e. dancing) if I'm staring at someone the whole time. Live shows are more about enjoying the spontaneous music being made in front of you and enjoying it (aurally), regardless of whether you actually see the musicians the whole time.

That being said, I've seen plenty of crappy solo laptop performances with lots of mouse action. But I've also seen plenty of boring 4 piece bands or DJ duo's.

If your going to be that obscure in whats you are doing - then at loeast put on a decent light show or something ffs - that was lame and utterly dull as a live show.

The fact that some of them were doing thing that might be vaguely interesting would be lost on the audience anyway - I assume they are low down and dont get the benefit of the camera angle.

I vauegly remember an underworld gig where along with a bit of crazy real time video mixing, what they guys were doing on the decks and mixers was captured on the back ground vid screen when they were doing some of their more intense mixing. Plus of course they have a ringer - sven these days to interact with the audience and deliver a show more directly, energise them directly etc.

Alot of bands who only use laptops and/or grooveboxes etc on stage alot from an underworld gig...

imagine if i walked out of a performance of a gorecki symphony because the musicians were just sitting in chairs playing their instruments.

but that's cool! I make some crappy music myself! I do give them credit for doing their thing - that seems to be my personal shortcoming - actually _doing_ anything. much too busy f*&$ing around on the computer, you see...

don't know how many symphonies you seen Live but I've seen many and they've all been more worth a showticket than these guys so far you've brought up wwf and symphonies..... you're just helping me make my point.

As somebody who struggles with how the Hell I would do my music live and make it entertaining and worth the price of admission, especially if you aren't doing dance music, I can see things from both sides.

I think the thing that bothers me the most about this is the scale of the stage and how they are all laid out side by side like the Jackson 5. It would probably look a little less boring if they either were facing each other in a circle and vibing off each other or have them staggered and in front and behind each other. This makes it look like they are at the closeout section at Guitar Center checking out what is on each table.
