Plain old instruments

Post by JCB » Sat Jul 21, 2007 1:45 am

I like all the oddball instruments that come with Live. However, I'm not really into them. I have no use for them. What I need is a piano, a guitar, a bass, and drums, Jazz and Combo style. There is an instrument for toms, but I can't find any instruments for snare, ride symbol, high hat, bass drum, etc. Where are they? If they're not in Live, does anyone know how I can get them?

There are a few drums which can be found among the various packs available for download. Not tons, though.

The piano is good in the EIC but it's not free, obviously. I heard that you can use the Draft version free though. but you would need the DVD, IOW boxed set as opposed to the download version of live

There is also a guitar in there and an upright bass. Also handy instruments like glockenspiel

I have EIC, I don't think I've ever used one sample. Not EIC's fault really I just find it easier to find/edit the sound I'm after in Reason.

Now that it's out there, I hope Ableton keeps developing the EIC without charging arm-and-a-leg upgrades.

On the subject of instruments in general, Live's presets still kinda suck.

Plain old instruments

Actually, I purchased EIC. I was reading the manual last night and found that it includes some of the instruments I want, but I can't find them. Somehow, I think, they never got installed.

I oredered the boxed set with EIC, but it never came. I did download and install Live 6 and unlocked both Live 6 and EIC. Is there something I'm missing? Do I have to install EIC? Am I looking in the wrong place? The manual just says the EIC instruments are listed in the browser, but they're just not there.

Can anyone help?

The EIC is a few gigs of samples and presets coming from a DVD.
Things might seem a bit empty if you try to use the EIc without actually installing it.

If you ordered a box but it didn't arrive, then contact [email protected]

I have yet to find one crash cymbal in Live's presets.
I have other one shot drum samples to use or sometimes I just rewire redrum from reason. In the impulse sounds there is very little included, it could also use some congas and latin sounds. I like Impulse and drop and drag is ok but they should include more drum sounds to use in impulse without needing 3rd party software.

The range of instruments in the EIC could also be better, I still find Reason better for the organs, eps/rhodes and strings. the woodwind section is the best thing in eic. guitar samples suck in eic and reason but as i am a guitarist that doesn't worry me.

I've used EIC and like it ok, but it seems like if I use samples, I can get a higher volume level.
It's hard to focus on just one thing for too long...

Voted no assuming the question is more basica istrument in live/from ableton - becuase I tend to go and find stuff they does what I want well...

Personally - I would be happier if ableton focussed more on the core essentials of Live. The one 'instrument' family that kind of makes some sense is the samplers, and thats more of a workflow thing - draging clips around etc.

But I dont care whtether or not they actually provide some sample are not - my use of a sample is mangling my own samples and clips.

If I want a good multi-sampled instrument - well Ill go out and find a good plugin to model that instrument.

I think in many ways ableton have it about right in some of the scope of stuff they provide in the box. However I think simpler and sampler should be merged into a single offering, retaining all the features of both and be in the box - not an extra, and perhaps support rex loops natively. I wont ever buy sampler because actually for my typical use, it actually seems less functional than simpler (I know overall its way more functional of course).

For live 7, I think ableton should perhaps poll us for the shortcomings in the currently out of box plugins - specifically the kind of stuff we have to do wierd macro/rack and routing hacks for, so those hacks are no longer needed, and instead allow us to focus more on core sound design.

Maybe see if there is something very common thats missing on the processing side - for example, Compressor 1 and Compressor 2 both being given a true key input for independent sidechaining, perhaps a module to derive a control single from continuous audio levels and expands the racks concept and audio routing concepts to include per control tracks and pure control routings - think modular effects and CV etc - like Reason has I guess. This kind of thing massive expands the overall creativeity options. Sticsk more instruments in the box truly does not as people can just go out and buy stuff like that.

I dont think ableton should not address mastering tool at all, nor synths, drums etc. I can understand a desire to from the point of view of providing some kind of out-the-box experience for those who have nothing else, but actually some links to a bunch of good free VSTs index web sites would be more useful to noobs.
Nothing to see here - move along!
