foot controller

Post by jbirdsong » Sun Jul 22, 2007 7:57 pm

greetings live people,

I want to use live for well... live music... and I am wanting to set up a midi foot controller. Anyone out there with useful info on basic set up? Recommendations? Baringer or Yamaha pedals? others? I understand you must use a 3rd party program- Bidule? miditube? What is working for you? Thanks for your help!

I have a Rolls RFX MidiBuddy which is great. Much more light weight and smaller than the FCB1010, with the same amount of buttons (no expression pedals, though). I researched for a long time, and was very close to getting a Behringer FCB1010 til I found the MidiBuddy. It's perfect for my needs, and requires no programming of the pedal itself (but does require minimal software programming, read on).

This is the one problem, though: Unlike the FCB 1010 and other, more expensive (and larger/heavier) boards, the foot pedal itself is not programmable, and it only sends Program Change messages, which live doesnt recognize, so you will need to use something like bomes midi translator for PC, or controlaid and midipipe for Mac to change the incoming PC messages to note or CC messages. But these programs are free and easy to use with minimal cpu drain. Furthermore, the box is built like a tank in the USA and I bought mine for $50 on ebay in great condition, which makes it a really great value. Buttons are sturdy, and it works like a charm (so far, bought it used, still testing it). Just my 2 cents.

+1 on the midibuddy. Goddamn bargain. You WILL need Bomes/MidiOx, though...

Use it in conjunction with Dummy Clips, and you're in hands free heaven.
