If i try to load a current project using the new beta, it loads fine, but when it gets to the prompt telling me the beta will expire August 11th, i cannot close the window by clicking on OK - the only way out is to force quit.

Cant reproduce this. Nearly identical setup.
My guess is this:
You clicked finder while loading Live. Click on the Live icon in the dock, then on the expiration notice.
If thats not it, maybe the preferences got corrupted during the first load.
Delete prefs and try again.
If that doesn't work, I'm out of ideas
