Mac/Live/Sampler versus Muse Receptor/Kontakt/Komplete

Post by jengyi » Fri Aug 03, 2007 3:43 pm

Hello folks,

I know there was a similar thread, but I thought this might be unique enough to warrant a new thread.

I'm a world music performer (more specifically Korean trad. drums/music)

I've composed and performed acoustically for many years and want to know try creating a new live show with my ensemble. I'm somewhat of a newbie with this technology, but willing to learn.

My main objective is to put on a live recital/show next year.

I wish to have an assortment of drum triggers (Roland, Yamaha, Pintech, DIY) that will trigger samples/sounds of acoustic drums. As well as triggering some loops that we will play along with. I will be also using soft-synth sounds as this will be more of a "fusion" project. I plan to have somewhere around 20-25 triggers all hooked up to a couple of Alesis Trigger I/O and into a Quadra Merge.

Therefore I will need software that will sample my drums hits and then be able to trigger them as well as the loops in a live performance. I would like to experiment with effects/modulations on the original acoustic sounds to give it a new aesthetic rather than mimicry (Oh look he is playing Korean drums on a drum pad!). But I do not plan to warp them beyond recognition.

After doing some research I'm still divided between using my Mac with Live/Sampler and the Muse Receptor with Kontakt/Komplete.

I already own a Mac.

It seems there are pros and cons with either set up (stability, integration, ease of use etc.). If I had unlimited funds I would get both and might get Live for now and the Receptor sometime next year.

Can anybody offer their opinion? Many thanks
