Converting VBR files

Hello. A friend of mine sold me his Denon dns3000's. They work ok with mp3'z though if they happen to be vbr's there is very limited functionality. Is there an easy way to convert all my vbr's into regular mp3 format? The thing is, I don't know which of my mp3's are vbr's until i burn them to cd and throw them in the denons. Thanks!

use cool edit pro..

what i do is this, save as change the mp3 to cbr and if its a 224 file upsample it to 256. the way vbr works is the high points (lots of data) it goes high then on breakdowns etc it will drop.

so the 224 is actually the highest point of the vbr.

upsapmling wont make it sound anybetter, but it will ensure that your file will have all the data.

Not totally true.. Your cant reencode those files without loss. 2nd generation mp3.

the process.
1.Software decodes the mp3 into uncompressed PCM (.wav)
Then re encodes to your codec of choice.

picking a higher bitrate for the 2nd encode will not keep the original integrity. It might still sound ok but it is a 2nd generation lossy encode.
