MP3 Converters and how do I cut down on file sizes?

Post by billdiz » Tue Aug 14, 2007 11:06 pm

Hi all,

Maybe you can help me in converting my songs from wav to mp3’s, currently when I render my own songs to disk from ablton live6 in wav format there file sizes are about 60mb (should they come out this large?), obviously I require some sort of converter to lower the file size to 4mb and to a generic file type like MP3. What’s the best program to use for this, - I don’t mind paying money for this program either - so all suggestions would be great!

PC - CDEX with the latest LAME .dll dropped in CDEX's codecs directory.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/ <-- CDEX

http://lame.sourceforge.net/index.php <-- LAME

Depends on how long they are...but it sounds about right. You can use Audacity (free) to convert file formats on OS X or Windoze.

iTunes? There will be a loss in quality as you compress though, whatever you use.

Itunes will let you go up to 320K, and it's free. That's what I use

Audacity is also free and uses the LAME encoder for both Mac & PC. It's not too bad of an audio editor, as well, if you don't already have [a legal] one.

The only thing I do not like about Audacity is that it takes forever to convert to mp3....It's like it only rips at 1x or 2x, vs itunes which is about 8x or so.

I've never noticed it taking a noticably long time to convert, even at 320k. How long does it take for you to convert a 6min song?

if they are about 6 minutes long, in stereo, at 44.1 Khz/16bit... then yes!

I use CDEX with lame, too.

How can i minimize the size to like a 4mb MP3 - like ones that you buy off the net??? and still keep that decent quality!?
this is the only thing that confuses the hell out of me - it weird because i understand everything else?!
