simpler vs impulse vs a wav editor...help a newbie out?

Post by badnicki » Sun Aug 26, 2007 2:48 pm

Hi there...Can anyone point me to a good resource explaining the difference/benefit of a sampler rather than using a wav editor and a drum machine?

I'm assuming that the fun part of a sampler is taking a sound and turning it into something completely different. I like using sounds as-is, cleaning up hiss and pops etc, and then at most pitching them up or down a wee bit. Am I wrong in thinking I can do all that with a wav editor and Impulse??

As an FYI, I'm really interested in Akufen-type micro house lifting samples from vinyl and my own field recording.

Thanks :)

I don't know of a resource but yeah a sampler gives you more power to edit the sound. Different devices have their pros and cons, different filters, looping modes, modulation options and all that sort of thing.
Impulse is designed for what it sounds you want to achieve. Its simple, drop the sample into a cell, pitch, stretch, set the envelope and play pretty easily.
I'd have a mess about dropping a sample into impulse and simpler or sampler. See if you can get away with impulse or if you prefer the setup of simpler/sampler.
And the wave editor you would use with your samples before, you can do a lot inside of that (if you want to).
