deep dubby basslines

Post by Mismoplastico » Mon Aug 27, 2007 9:20 pm

can anyone give me some advice on how to create low basslines with a lot of dubbed down sound to them? i am not sure if this is easy to understand or not, so if i am not being clear enough let me know! i have all the live instruments, but i am the most comfortable with operator so if anyone can direct me with that it would be best.
thanx, zack

post a sample zack... your adjectives, while entertaining to read, don't mean much to us

I use third party plugs to make my dub bass - usually absynth/FM8 (FM synthesis anyway), then I put them through the Ampeg SVX bass amp plug, then I do some serious eqing - Eqing is most important cos 1) you don't want TOO much sub and 2) you want to get rid of any unwanted harmonics in the higher frequencies. I usually use 3 notches and two shelves. I don't usually compress my basslines - I just tweak the synth's amp envelope and the note velocities.

I use FM cos it allows for more "realistic" attack. I don't have Operator, but I'm guessing it does FM. You can do quite precise eqing with the Live eq...

FM is just my preference - a lot of people use subtractive synthesis with simple Sine/Square/Triangle waves.... either way, its all about eq. A scope - like the one by Voxengo can really help.... http://www.voxengo.com/product/SPAN/
