Problems with Side Chain

Post by cubaz » Mon Sep 03, 2007 11:05 pm

I want to send signal from a kick drum to a Sonalksis side chain compresor on another track via Return A, when i try to send the return signal to the track that has the compressor, ie track 1, i'm supposed to get a second input menu to choose the compressor, but instead the menu is gray and not activated so i can't select the compressor's side chain input.. does anyone know why is this not activated?.. should i check something in Preferences?.. i tried also using vocoders, gates, etc. with input but none of them work.. i'm updated to the last 6 version on mac PPC OSX 10.4.10..

thanks for your attention..

Sidechain inputs of plugins are only available in the output menu of the track you send from. In your case that's the output menu of the return track.

I see, maybe i wrote it wrongly, i was talking about the output channel, and then the output to the compressor, but now, i tried with Audio Units and it worked, i don't know why the output menu for plug ins from Return A or any channel doesn't appear active with VST's

Thanks.

ahh I just ran into this problem myself. Seems the side chaining doesnt work on vst but does on AU. however the release times of the compressor can't go below 50ms - or atleast I don't know how. which limits how the effect can be shaped.. its the best side chaining plugin i've found for a mac so far.

VST (at least, the current version of the spec) isn't very flexible about sidechaining, as I understand it the developer has to hardcode in the number of sidechain channels. So often they have multiple versions of a plugin, ones with a sidechain input and ones without. (The same for multiple outs.) AUs don't need to do this, so it's usually easier to use the AU version of a multi-in or multi-out plugin.
