I bought a Siig Firewire 800 expresscard, works fine as a 400 port but can't get it to run at 800 speed. Maybe its a specific problem related to my computer model, but Siig support have been unable to help me. My advice: dont fork out the extra bucks for an 800 Siig, just go for a single or double 400. But then there is the issue, as already mentioned, about bus power still. I share your pain about PC's not coming standard with a decent firewire port. Almost went apple for just this reason, but paying double the price never quite got me there.
