Beat detection with many rock music files

Hi,

I am going to make a live set (DJ) and thought about playing more than just one rock song.
As i threw some of the songs (Nirvana, Red Hot Chilies ... and so on) into my live set i realized that it will take some HOURS to set the Warp Markers right where they should sit.

Does anybody know why and how to set up those kind of song fast with Live?
Help is much appreciated.

Practice, keyboard shortcuts, and practice.

And warping with your ears, and not your eyes. What a waveform looks like is irrelevant.

Also, if you're only planning on beatmatching the intro and outro and not dropping in synched loops, don't waste your time warping the middle of the track.

I just stick the metronome on and do maybe 4 bars at a time. Hit the up arrow and go onto the next 4 bars. Doesn't take long!

I recommend a large pot of tea and a packet of cigarettes. It's not a particularly fun task.

Rather than warp one bar at a time, look ahead 16 or 32 bars and put a marker there. Then go back to the middle of the section and put another marker in. Repeat until it sounds right. I wouldn't go further than 1 marker per bar, or you'll take out any groove.

Make some simple impulse kits, (4/4 kick with a sharp attack, one with added snare on 2 and 4, and a couple more with some hi hat or something added). Use these as a constant reference to check your tracks, then everything should fit together later.

I just thought there is an easier ways guys, ok?

I know that it's not fun but normally i don't do that kind of job with Live. It does it automatically without having me to do anything except some adjustments in the end.

I hope you guys know that it's quite boring and the effort is out of scale...

Just trying to make you feel like it's not an insurmountable task. You're right, it'll be a royal pain in the arse.

If it makes you feel any better, I'm in the same boat. That's why I clicked on the thread.

Most of my warping has been with electronic stuff, but this weekend I'm going to try to put together a collection of indy, funk, pop etc. I'm not much looking foward to it.

But once, we're done, it'll be lots of fun. Will be needing a stiff drink afterwards, though.

With practice it should take you 1 take to warp a track. Just do it with a pre-warped track over the top and stick your markers in so it keeps in time. Easy.

i warp and use rock, funk tunes all the time.

if youve got a gig coming up and you get burnt out on warping the whole tune (it does take a long time and you will get sick of the tune after while) just consider using shorter loops/clips of the tune to drop over other stuff.

they probably just wanna hear the chorus anyhow....

am i the only one who thinks this is odd? since when has rock been about beat-matching? more to the point, when have nirvana/chilli peppers fans ever given a fook about their fave tracks being pinned to a constant tempo?

I've heard quite a few 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' mashups and personally I like to play with 'Funky Monks' in my own DJ mashup fun set (careful of the half measure break in the middle of Funky Monks.
