Oxygen 8 midi assignation of knobs problemo

I am having difficulties with Oxygen 8 assigning midi to the knobs.

While the keyboard, pitch bend and modulator wheels work fine, it seems that when I try to assign midi control (for example a send or effect nuance) to the knobs I get no response, no recognition that I am moving the knobs, and they don't show up in the midi "list" on the left like it is supposed to. It is like the knobs don't exist.

What is wrong?

EDIT: using Live v 6.0.10 and (erm) Vista.
