Startup time & external drive

Post by samsensual » Mon Sep 17, 2007 4:32 pm

Hi there,
I have been searching for hours, but I did not succeed in finding a thread that deals with exactly the same problem I encounter.
I use an external drive with all my music software. Live and its library as well as all VST plugins and even the project files are stored on though different partitions, but still all on the same internal HDD of my notebook. What is put on the external drive is purely samples (e.g. libraries for Kontakt/Battery etc.) and the samples needed for certain VST plugins (like Atmosphere) - so all in all - it is samples  .
However, I experience VERY high startup loading times with Live after every Windows startup - my external HDD indicates that Live is obviously scanning the whole drive for whatever. Yes, I have worked with other DAW programs before, even ones that only depend on VST, and I never had such problems as described above before. To confirm again, nothing that should be relevant for Live - apart from the samples - is stored on that external drive. I even tried to point Ableton's internal browsers to paths which lead to the internal partitions, just in case this could cause the trouble.
The fun thing about it is that when (dis-)connecting ANY device on my computer forces Ableton seems to force Live to re-scan the drive on startup of the program - so not only (re-)starting Windows XP SP 2 causes this intensive scanning. If I only close Live and re-open it again, it loads within seconds.

So, long story for a mysterious problem - does anybody know why this is happening? Did anybody encounter similar problems and find a solution? Should I trash my computer (which I won't :-))?

Thanks in advance,

sam sensual
